Harvest mites

Harvest mites (Trombicula autumnalis), also known as berry bugs, are tiny parasitic larvae, just visible to the naked eye as orange dots. They are a common cause of skin problems and itchiness in late summer and autumn and are often to be found between the toes or in the folds of skin at the sides of the cat’s ears (use a magnifying glass). They can cause an intense itch and skin reaction in some cats. Owners are often bothered by them too, especially after a period in the garden when itchiness can occur around the legs or waist. Treatment is by using mild washes to remove the bugs physically and by applying flea control products under veterinary advice. Some cats with very intense reactions may require antiinflammatory drugs to ease the discomfort. The parasites disappear after the first frosts, which kill them. See also Skin problems.
